No Rhyme or Reason

Donuts are like the big No No for Sammie.  I guess the combination of fat and sugar just wreaks havoc on her blood sugar, raising it for hours regardless of the amount of insulin I give her.  At least that's been our experience in the nearly three years since Sam's diagnosis. So we avoid donuts now.  BUT it was Sam's B-day weekend and Grandma had come to visit AND there were suddenly donuts.  So, of course,  Sam had one...maple glazed with sprinkles...mmmmm.  I gave her the typical insulin for the carbs rounding up because it WAS a donut.  and a few hours later she was 262.  It was just after midnight. There shouldn't be anymore insulin on board now other than her Lantus.   I didn't correct...I don't know why...just wanted to wait.  She was 167 at 1:30am.  Ok. Good. She'll probably be a little high in the morning but we'll correct it then.  Well, like I said no rhyme or reason, she wakes up this morning at 73.   Boy am I glad I didn't give her even a half a unit at midnight like I normally would have.

Sleeping in

After a long 4th of July weekend, the entire family is enjoying sleeping in.  Nice!  But I can't help but feel a little guilty because I know that Sam's sugar will be a little high when I do get her up.  She was 53 at 12:20am...Lots of activity yesterday...running around with her 18month old cousin.  I suspected a drop.  I gave her a snack for the low.  Her 2am check was 91 which was good.  She probably would have had a good number if I had woken her up earlier.  But she needed the sleep and I can correct her bg.

268  Not great but not too bad either considering she slept til 11am!  And she felt like the rest of her siblings...getting her days and nights mixed up during summer vacation.

The mourning dove incident

Well a little excitement yesterday... Our adopted alley cat cornered a mourning dove in our garage. When my husband went out to check on the laundry, the frantic bird saw a way out...through my kitchen, down the hall and into my 16 yr old son's bedroom. I kept the cat from following and my husband and son were able to urge the scared bird out the open bedroom window after several attempts. Fortunately the mourning dove was unharmed and flew off into the garden.

Refreshing for a new year!

Our garden in the spring.  Its much bigger and more productive now.
Boy! The summer is flying by. I can't believe Ive been off for more than a month already. The garden is growing awesomely. I have pumpkins turning orange, cantaloupes, a watermelon, onions, potatoes, carrots, squash, tomatoes and much more.  My girls really enjoy picking fruits and veggies right off the plants and snacking  then and there.  Most of the time Sammie doesn't even worry about the carbs.  They're minimal and she runs  'em off playing outside in the warm weather.   In addition to the gardening, the girls and I made papier mache dragon eggs. They're dry and ready to paint.   However, I can't get away from school completely. I have been on the web and reading many books, gathering new ideas for next year's kindergarteners.  And I just discovered the appeal of reading and blogging about parenting a diabetic child.
